About Kaohsiung International Steel & Iron Sculpture Festival

To Kaohsiung, steel and iron are more than just construction materials. They are the foundation of a bustling industrial city, whose citizens have nerves of steel and iron will. As time went by, they became the most iconic mediums for passionate artists to express their ideas.

Founded in 2002, the Kaohsiung International Steel & Iron Sculpture Festival (KISISF) is an event that celebrates the vigorous steel industry of the city. Through art and creation, steel and iron are no longer just cold, hard building materials; instead, they gain new significance as unique art mediums.

KISISF is a biennial event; 2016 is the 8th festival. During the festivals, sculptors from Taiwan and abroad gather in Kaohsiung to work on-site. They focus on improving the connection between people and their environment, as well as encouraging interactions between the public and the artists. As they cut, weld, and bend steel and iron, the artists showcase their creativity and impressive stamina and endurance; the public will no doubt find both the creation process and the sculptures fascinating and mesmerizing. With over a decade of history, the festival has grown into a public platform where artists can release their creative energy and explore infinite possibilities. At the same time, it offers citizens a chance to expand their imagination.

The theme of the 2016 Kaohsiung International Steel & Iron Sculpture Festival is "Steel Play". This year, using 100 tons of scrap metal sponsored by Tung Ho Steel Enterprise, 7 groups of artists from 5 different countries (U.S.A., Japan, China, Indonesia, and Taiwan,) gather at Pier-2 to create their works. Steel is a common building material for industrialized societies. The theme of this year's festival, "Steel Play", represents a break from the monotony and uniformity of the industrial world. The festival encourages participants to find freedom and unlock creativity through art. Through the workshop, the festival wishes to highlight the spectacular sculptures and works of arts, as well as change the viewers' thoughts and ideas about life and play.
